Dr. Harold J. Arata III, Director of the Riverside Research Cyber Center of Excellence, organized and led the symposium’s Cybersecurity Panel. He enlisted a distinguished group of general officers and senior government officials, including Maj Gen Earl D. Matthews, Cyberspace Operations Director, Office of Information Dominance and Chief Information Officer; Brig Gen Bernie Skoch (retired, US Air Force), CyberPatriot Commissioner; Montana Williams, National Cyberspace Education Office Director; and Jim Christy, US Forensics National Director, to sit on the panel. A robust discussion of the National Institution for Standards & Technology’s (NIST) Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure and Cybersecurity (the Framework) ensued, providing panelists and symposium attendees a platform to address how the Framework impacts the security of their businesses, products, data, and protected information.

Released in February 2014, the Framework answered Presidential Executive Order 13636 - Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity by providing a voluntary, risk-based cybersecurity framework. The Framework details standards, guidelines, and practices designed to promote the protection of critical infrastructure in addition to establishing five core functions of cybersecurity programs and four levels of maturity in implementing those functions. Symposiums and panels, such as this NDIA event, promote and educate audiences on cybersecurity awareness and measures.

“We were honored to lead the NDIA panel on behalf of Riverside Research,” said Dr. Arata. “As a country that depends on the reliable functioning of critical infrastructure to safeguard national and economic security, this event is a great way to encourage the development of the Framework - an indispensable defense tool in industry and government that keeps America strong, safe, and free.”
