Information We Collect About You and How We Collect It

We may collect several types of information from and about users of the Website, including information:

  • By which you may be personally identified, such as name, postal address, email address, telephone number, or any other identifier by which you may be contacted online or offline (“personal information”);
  • That is about you but individually does not identify you; and/or
  • About your internet connection, the equipment you use to access the Website, and usage details.

We collect this information:

  • Directly from you when you provide it to us; or
  • Automatically as you navigate through the site. Information collected automatically may include usage details, internet protocol (“IP”) addresses, and information collected through cookies, web beacons, and other tracking technologies.

The information we collect on or through the Website may include:

  • Information that you provide by filling in forms on the Website. We may also ask you for information when you report a problem with the Website. By providing any such information, you represent and warrant that any and all personal information provided is true, complete, and accurate, and you must notify us of any changes to such personal information;
  • Records and copies of your correspondence (including email addresses) if you contact us;
  • Your search queries on the Website; and/or
  • Any other type of information you provide to us through the Website.

As you navigate through and interact with the Website, we may use automatic data collection technologies to collect certain information about your equipment, browsing actions, and patterns, including:

  • Information about your computer and internet connection, including your IP address, operating system, and browser type; and/or
  • Other types of information collected through automatic data collection technologies.

The information we collect automatically is only statistical data and does not include personal information. This information is primarily needed to maintain the security and operation of the Website, and for our internal analytics and reporting purposes. It may be used to help us improve the Website and to deliver a better and more personalized service, including by enabling us to:

  • Estimate Website audience size and usage patterns;

The technologies used for this automatic data collection may include:

  • Cookies (or browser cookies). A cookie is a small file placed on the hard drive of a user or visitor’s computer. A user or visitor may refuse to accept browser cookies by activating the appropriate setting on the user or visitor’s browser. However, changing these settings may result in a user or visitor being unable to access certain parts of the Website. Unless a user or visitor has adjusted their browser setting to refuse cookies, our system will issue cookies when a browser is directed to the Website.
  • Web Beacons. Pages of the Website and our emails may contain small electronic files known as web beacons (also referred to as clear gifs, pixel tags, and single-pixel gifs) that permit us, for example, to count users who have visited those pages or opened an email and for other related website statistics (for example, recording the popularity of certain Website content and verifying system and server integrity).
  • Flash Cookies. Certain features of the Website may use local stored objects (or Flash cookies) to collect and store information about your preferences and navigation to, from, and on the Website. Flash cookies are not managed by the same browser settings as are used for browser cookies. For information about managing privacy and security settings for Flash cookies, see Choices About How We Use and Disclose Information.

We do not collect personal information automatically, but we may tie this information to personal information about you that we collect from other sources or you provide to us.

How Long We Keep Your Information

We will only keep your personal information for as long as it is necessary for the purposes set out in this privacy policy, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law (such as tax, accounting, or other legal requirements).

When we have no ongoing legitimate business need to process your personal information, we will either delete or anonymize such information, or, if this is not possible (for example, because your personal information has been stored in backup archives), then we will store your personal information in a manner consistent with our organizational and technical security measures and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible.

Accessing and Correcting Your Information

You may send us an email at websiteprivacy@riversideresearch.org to request access to, correct or delete any personal information that you have provided to us. We will consider and act upon any request in accordance with applicable data protection laws. We may not accommodate a request to change information if we believe the change would violate any law or legal requirement or cause the information to be incorrect.

Residents of certain states, such as California, Colorado, Virginia, and Utah may have additional personal information rights and choices. Please see Your State Privacy Rights for more information.

Verification Process

Upon receiving such a request, we will need to verify your identity to determine you are the same person about whom we have the information in our system. These verification efforts require us to ask you to provide information so that we can match it with information you have previously provided us. For instance, depending on the type of request you submit, we may ask you to provide certain information so that we can match the information you provide with the information we already have on file, or we may contact you through a communication method (e.g., phone or email) that you have previously provided to us. We may also use other verification methods as the circumstances dictate.

We will only use personal information provided in your request to verify your identity or authority to make the request. To the extent possible, we will avoid requesting additional information from you for the purposes of verification. However, if we cannot verify your identity from the information already maintained by us, we may request that you provide additional information for the purposes of verifying your identity and for security or fraud-prevention purposes. We will delete such additionally provided information as soon as we finish verifying you.

Your Privacy Rights

In some regions (like the EEA, UK, and Canada), you may have certain rights under applicable data protection laws. These may include the right (i) to request access and obtain a copy of your personal information, (ii) to request rectification or erasure; (iii) to restrict the processing of your personal information; and (iv) if applicable, to data portability. In certain circumstances, you may also have the right to object to the processing of your personal information. You can make such a request by contacting us websiteprivacy@riversideresearch.org.

We will consider and act upon any request in accordance with applicable data protection laws. If you are located in the EEA or UK and you believe we are unlawfully processing your personal information, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection supervisory authority. You can find their contact details here: https://ec.europa.eu/justice/data-protection/bodies/authorities/index_en.htm.

If you are located in Switzerland, the contact details for the data protection authorities are available here: https://www.edoeb.admin.ch/edoeb/en/home.html.

If we are relying on your consent to process your personal information, which may be express and/or implied consent depending on the applicable law, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. You can withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us at websiteprivacy@riversideresearch.org. However, please note that this will not affect the lawfulness of the processing before its withdrawal of your consent nor, when applicable law allows, will it affect the processing of your personal information conducted in reliance on lawful processing grounds other than your consent.

You can unsubscribe from our marketing and promotional communications at any time by clicking on the unsubscribe link in the emails that we send, or by contacting us at websiteprivacy@riversideresearch.org. You will then be removed from the marketing lists. However, we may still communicate with you — for example, to respond to service requests, or for other purposes.

Most web browsers are set to accept cookies by default. If you prefer, you can usually choose to set your browser to remove cookies and to reject cookies. If you choose to remove cookies or reject cookies, this could affect certain features of the Website. To opt out of interest-based advertising by advertisers on the Website visit http://www.aboutads.info/choices/.

If you have questions or comments about your privacy rights, you may email us at websiteprviacy@riversideresearch.org.

Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track (“DNT”) feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online. If a standard for online tracking is adopted that we must follow in the future, we will inform you about that practice through a revised version of this privacy policy.

Your State Privacy Rights

State consumer privacy laws may provide their residents with additional rights regarding our use of their personal information. To learn more about California residents’ privacy rights, visit https://oag.ca.gov/privacy/ccpa.

California's “Shine the Light” law (Civil Code Section § 1798.83) permits users of the Website that are California residents to request, once a year and free of charge, certain information regarding our disclosure of personal information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes and the names and addresses of all third parties with which we shared personal information in the immediately preceding calendar year. To make such a request, please send an email to websiteprivacy@riversideresearch.org.

Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, and Utah each provide their state residents with rights to:

  • Confirm whether we process their personal information.
  • Access and delete certain personal information.
  • Data portability.
  • Opt-out of personal data processing for targeted advertising and sales.

To exercise any of these rights please contact us at websiteprivacy@riversideresearch.org.

Other states may afford their residents similar or different rights with respect to their privacy and this policy does not constitute legal advice and should not be considered to be a comprehensive listing or description of such rights. You are encouraged to seek legal counsel to determine whether you have additional privacy or other rights under the laws of any state, country, or other jurisdiction.

If You Are Located in the EU or UK, This Section Applies to You

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK GDPR require us to explain the valid legal bases we rely on in order to process your personal information. As such, we may rely on the following legal bases to process your personal information:

  • Consent. We may process your information if you have given us permission (i.e., consent) to use your personal information for a specific purpose. You can withdraw your consent at any time;
  • Legitimate Interests. We may process your information when we believe it is reasonably necessary to achieve our legitimate business interests and those interests do not outweigh your interests and fundamental rights and freedoms. For example, we may process your personal information for some of the purposes described in order to:
    • Send users information about special offers and discounts on our products and services,
    • Support our marketing activities, and/or
    • Diagnose problems and/or prevent fraudulent activities;
  • Legal Obligations. We may process your information where we believe it is necessary for compliance with our legal obligations, such as to cooperate with a law enforcement body or regulatory agency, exercise or defend our legal rights, or disclose your information as evidence in litigation in which we are involved. Applicable law may require us to keep such efforts confidential; and/or
  • Vital Interests. We may process your information where we believe it is necessary to protect your vital interests or the vital interests of a third party, such as situations involving potential threats to the safety of any person.

If You Are Located in Canada, This Section Applies to You

We may process your information if you have given us specific permission or express consent to use your personal information for a specific purpose, or in situations where your permission can be inferred or where there is implied consent for us to use your personal information for a specific purpose. You can withdraw your consent at any time. In some exceptional cases, we may be legally permitted under applicable law to process your information without your consent, including, for example:

  • If collection is clearly in the interests of an individual and consent cannot be obtained in a timely way;
  • For investigations and fraud detection and prevention;
  • For business transactions provided certain conditions are met;
  • If it is contained in a witness statement and the collection is necessary to assess, process, or settle an insurance claim;
  • For identifying injured, ill, or deceased persons and communicating with next of kin;
  • If we have reasonable grounds to believe an individual has been, is, or may be victim of financial abuse;
  • If it is reasonable to expect collection and use with consent would compromise the availability or the accuracy of the information and the collection is reasonable for purposes related to investigating a breach of an agreement or a contravention of the laws of Canada or a province;
  • If disclosure is required to comply with a subpoena, warrant, court order, or rules of the court relating to the production of records;
  • If it was produced by an individual in the course of their employment, business, or profession and the collection is consistent with the purposes for which the information was produced;
  • If the collection is solely for journalistic, artistic, or literary purposes; and/or
  • If the information is publicly available and is specified by the regulations.

Other Privacy Rights

You may:

  • Object to the processing of your personal information;
  • Request correction of your personal data if it is incorrect or no longer relevant, or ask to restrict the processing of the information;
  • Designate an authorized agent to make a request under the CCPA on your behalf. We may deny a request from an authorized agent that does not submit proof that they have been validly authorized to act on your behalf in accordance with the CCPA; and/or
  • Request to opt out from future selling of your personal information to third parties. Upon receiving an opt-out request, we will act upon the request as soon as feasibly possible, but no later than fifteen (15) days from the date of the request submission.

To exercise these rights, you can contact us by email at websiteprivacy@riversideresearch.org. If you have a complaint about how we handle your data, we would like to hear from you. We will not discriminate against you if you exercise your privacy rights.

Data Security

We have implemented measures designed to secure your personal information from accidental loss and from unauthorized access, use, alteration, and disclosure.

Unfortunately, the transmission of information via the internet is not completely secure. Although we do our best to protect your personal information, we cannot and do not guarantee the security of your personal information transmitted to the Website. Any transmission of personal information is at your own risk. You should only access the Website within a secure environment. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained on the Website.

The safety and security of your information ultimately depends on you. Where we have given you (or where you have chosen) a password for access to certain parts of the Website, you are solely responsible for keeping this password confidential. We ask you not to share your password with anyone and that you choose a password that is unique and follows best practices in terms of being difficult for hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized third parties to discover.
